Professional
Mike started Scully Design in January of 2005 and as the principal designer and engineer he has helped a wide range of clients bring their products from concept to reality. Scully Design quickly outgrew its small office and in January of 2007 Mike founded the Design Guild San Francisco to establish a professional studio with an atmosphere and resources conducive to top-notch design.
Prior to founding Scully Design, Mike worked at Argyle Design for four years. Working at a small firm allowed him to assume the roles of designer, engineer and project manager in all phases of the product development cycle.
Mike first gained engineering experience at IBM in the Polymers and Mechanical Parts division where he worked with tooling and part vendors to produce plastic, sheet metal and diecast parts, and worked with internal manufacturing engineers to solve quality problems on the production lines.
His first taste of corporate design came as an industrial design intern in Compaq’s commercial portables division.
Education
Mike earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State in 1997. During that time, he discovered the field of industrial design and stayed at NCSU to earn a Masters of Industrial Design degree in 2000. Blending the creativity of design with the analytical problem solving of engineering is what really interests and inspires him.
