The Scully Design Process

Each project is unique and while the process may vary slightly, the core ideas remain the same. Ideally, Scully Design would help to guide the project from definition to manufactured parts. We begin by researching the market, identifying relevant technologies and talking with the client to attain a clear understanding of the problem. This understanding guides us as we generate a wide spectrum of ideas through sketches, study models, or whatever methods best suit the project. The idea is to cover all bases before filtering out and refining the best ideas.

We begin CAD modeling early on in the design process using Pro/Engineer as a sketch tool to further develop ideas. This CAD database is maintained throughout the project as the parts and assemblies are engineered to optimize part and tooling costs, manufacturing concerns, and regulatory concerns while still maintaining the original design intent.

What is Concurrent Design?

In a typical product development process a market research team defines the problem which they then pass to the designers to design a solution which then gets thrown over a wall to the engineers to implement. With this segmented approach much is lost in translation. Concurrent design breaks the mold of the traditional development cycle by involving each of these constituencies throughout the process. The net result is more complete problem definition, a tighter development schedule and a better implementation of the design intent.

Scully Design takes concurrent design to the next level since the principal client contact, designer and engineer is the same person. As Principal, Mike Scully works closely with the client throughout the process to ensure that there are no surprises on either side and that the clients intentions are being met. As the lead designer, Mike is able to generate creative ideas that take marketing and engineering concerns into account and as the lead engineer he is able to follow through on the original design intent.
